High-lighting an interesting conundrum.

Roughly 100 years after the snap-action toggle switch was patented (by William J. Newton and Morris Goldberg), a snap-action purchase of this carved relief mermaid made us ponder, is a light switch “on” when it is up or down? Well, it turns out that depends on your bearings. In Canada it’s up, but in the UK it’s down! Not that this White Rock, British Columbia, captive appears to care – she’s clearly turned her back on the problem.
